WHAT SHOES TO WEAR THIS WEDDING SEASON

Posted on 27 April, 2017

Do dum da dum. Doo dum da dum. That was the wedding song, not to be confused with the funeral march. Alas, spring has sprung and the marital season lies ahead of us. Dress shops will be swamped with girls, wading their way through masses of silk, satin and lace. It’s the biggest day of their lives after all.

But here at Goodwin Smith, we feel like the groom needs a little more attention. When you leave the church, crunching the confetti down the aisle, people are going to notice your shoes.

While the bride will no doubt recruit four of her most stylish friends and spend a minimum of two days scouring shops across the land, the groom is more partial to a quick trip to Debenhams, bish bash bosh, outfit sorted.

Well we’re here to tell you: you deserve better, lads. Below, we’ve comprised a list of our finest formal footwear for you to drool over - all of which are ideal for the big day.

So sit back, and be inspired…

Contemporary

Traditional not quite your thing? Prefer to break instead of conform to convention? Don’t worry, we’ve got that base covered too. Our Allan Tan is one of our brand new styles in the SS17 collection. It doesn’t get more contemporary than that, does it?

You’ll notice the Allan Tan has a rather unusual finish to them. This finish is achieved through a technique called acid washing. The supple nubuck leather is wiped over with an acid sponge, which gently removes any imperfections in the grain. They almost look like the teak decking on the back of Mr. Abramovich’s yacht.

The style and colour of these handsome brutes simply screams summer wedding. Pair them perfectly with a grey suit for an ultra stylish, modern twist on the most important outfit of your life.

Smart casual

Sometimes you might want to dress down a little to achieve ultimate cool. Look at James Dean. Coolest man to have lived, and most famous for wearing jeans, a plain white t-shirt and a harrington jacket. We’re not suggesting for one second you should wear jeans to your wedding lads, the missus would not be happy.

But if seemingly effortless style is what you’re chasing, look no further than our Gisburn Bordo. With its double brogue toe cap and premium burnished leather, this derby shoe can do it all.

If you’re a sucker for detail, go ahead and check out the GS logo on the sole. And don’t worry about it disappearing when you’re dancing the night away, as it’s laser etched. So get those MJ moves out and embarrass your new wife and the in-laws.

Overseas

So you’ve decided to take your wedding overseas. Barbara and Geoff (the in-laws) can’t make their pension stretch to cover a flight abroad, so they won’t be there to shake their heads disapprovingly as you marry their daughter. Win.

Since the weather abroad is highly likely to be of a sunnier climate than the UK, you’ll need a pair of footwear to suit. Our Mitton Bordo loafer is about as stylish as Monaco’s yachting village, yet as classical as Pavarotti’s voice box. Either way they’re going to steal the show.

“Nobody cared about my dress because of your stupid flashy shoes!” the wife said. The husband gave a rye smile, shaking his tassels in her face. Ah true love.

Traditional

There’s nothing quite like a traditional wedding. Church bells, organ, the bride in white, the groom in tails…maybe even a top hat and cane if you’re feeling particularly funky.

Our pair most at home going down the aisle has got to be the Sawley Black. As timeless as a clock without hands, these beauties are instant classics. With a single monk strap design, and a chiselled toe shape last, the style of the Sawley Black shoe is as elegant as it is practical.

The sole also features an anti-slip TPR forepart - so should you have a last minute change of heart, you can escape rather briskly…
